Verona Sofas - 1 to 10 Seaters Chesterfield Corner Sofas
How are sofa made?
Sofa manufacturing is a long process of expertise and detailed labour. There are many components to making a sofa and each requires meticulous attention. Understanding the hard work put into making your sofa can help give an increased appreciation towards it.
To construct the sofa, it firstly needs a foundation which is called framing. These are slabs of wood, nailed or glued together to form the framework of the sofa, to which padding and stuffing will be added to. The framework is usually made from wood, however, it can be made from steel or combinations of plastic and resin. The wood slabs need to be clear from any defects such as asymmetric features that could ruin the framework. The wood pieces need to be strong in able to support the sofa, with or without weight applied. This is an important stage when making the sofa as it would affect the later stages.
At RayFurniture we take extra care to make sure that our sofas are made with expert care. As mentioned, if the framing isn’t done properly or correctly, it can affect the way the sofa turns out in the later stages. For our sofas to look the way they do, as luxurious and high quality, our builders ensure everything is done properly before continuing on to the next stages.

After framing comes webbing and the springs being attached. Once the foundation is prepared, the padding is added on. This is what creates the girth of the sofa and fills out the hollows of the framework. The material used for the padding is jute; a type of burlap made from jute plants. This natural material is used as webbing to interweave and stretch across the framework. To strap the spring into the webbing, flax twine is used, in two lines to secure it into position. If there are heavy-gauge springs used, then wire might be added in as an extra measure to secure it. This process is repeated with springs added elsewhere such as the back springs or the springs used in the seats. The burlap is cut to size, then tightly lashed to the springs to minimize movement. This is to prevent the springs from wearing through the burlap over time.
Our sofas ensure that they are made correctly. The burlap we use ensures that the springs remain in position and function properly throughout usage. The burlap will not tear through usage and the springs are strong enough to support the furniture and extra weight added on.
Each part of the sofa is separately padded, with layers of added jute burlap. In some instances, other synthetics materials might be added such as horsehair. Padding is primarily made from animal hair, particularly hog or horse. Other paddings are foam and polyester fibber fill wrap, which are used in mass production rather than single projects. Some pre-processing may be necessary where animal hair is used to bond it together in order for it to be easily manipulated into the padding. The padded is encased around layers of burlap, arranged around where it needs to be and stitched into place. If there are pins used to hold the padding in place, they can be removed once the stitching has been done. All the pins must be accounted for and not left in the padding or they can poke through and cause discomfort. The amount of padding added determines the size of the sofa - the more added, the larger the sofa will be. Tighter stitching is then used, which divides the seat into two areas called the ‘platform’ and the ‘front’ of the sofa. The front is reshaped suing hand-stitching which is followed by a final, thicker layer of padding to fill in the crevices and dips created by the stitching in the burlap.

The arms of the sofa are done in the same manner - layers of padding and burlap are added on and fixed into place followed by muslin topping off the layer. The arms are given extra padding to make sure they are properly shaped. The padding needs to be inspected for any imperfections and changes can be made by adjusting the padding. There will be exposed wood parts that can be stained or painted to add a decorative feature to the sofa.

Every section of the sofa must be measured before the fabric is added on. This is because the fabric is usually placed over the sofa as a single sheet and then stitched into place. However, in some instances, the pieces can be sewn together beforehand before being attached to the padded frame. For example, having a fan-pleated look for the arms is a classic and can be done by pleating the fabric and sewing the fabric before pinning it down to the padding. Once the fabric has been properly placed over the sofa, finishing touches can be applied. This includes skirts, covers, cushions that are made separately from the sofa.

There is a wide range of different fabrics that can be used to wrap the sofa. A sofa may be covered with any choice of synthetic, natural, or blended fabrics that are available. Wool and nylon are the best choices of natural and synthetic fibres, but cotton, acetate, rayon, and polyester have their own functional properties that can benefit depending on what is needed. The fabric can then be finished with a protective anti-stain coating.
